Harry Smith: music, film, art, live. Festival opgedragen aan Harry Smith (1923-1991): de Amerikaanse kunstenaar, filmer en verzamelaar wiens naam is verbonden aan 'the Anthology of American Folk Music'. Deze verzameling songs, samengebracht door Smith, geldt als de bakermat van de populaire muziekcultuur van de VS in de twintigste eeuw. In De Balie worden in de voorafgaande dagen de films van Harry Smith vertoond; in Paradiso is er een speciaal optreden van The Handsome Family, die een set zullen spelen waarin 'de orginelen' van The Anthology centraal staan. Ook is er een uniek optreden van Meindert Talma & the Negroes die songs van de verzameling in het Nederlands zullen vertolken. Daarnaast een optreden van zanger-gitaris David Eugene Edwards (16 Horsepower, Woven Hand); het jonge Amerikaanse folkduo Born Heller; een presentatie over leven en werk van Harry Smith door Rani Singh (die de nalatenschap van Smith beheert) en een inleiding van schrijver-programmamaker Roel Bentz van den Berg

"(.....) Meindert Talma had translated some Anthology songs into Dutch. How would that work out? Well, it made Single Girl (yes, The Carter Family song also covered by 16 Horsepower on Folklore) sound even sillier. But the atmosphere of the darker songs was preserved remarkably well. The simple and straightforward lyrics delivered in Dutch with a Calvinistic northern accent managed to convey the same darkness and bleakness you'll find on Nick Cave's The Firstborn Is Dead. Meindert Talma's aura is that of a serious, introverted, teacher. Before each of the nine songs they played, Talma first explained in a lecturer's way when it was written, who the writer was, where he was born and what the song was about. It was funny to see the difference between that distance and the following intensity with which the songs were played".
